  • Company Profile: Prudential is a life insurer and provider of associated financial services. The group has operations in Asia, the United States and the United Kingdom and is listed on stock exchanges in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and New York. The group is structured into four principle business units: Prudential Corporation Asia (focused on life insurance, health and protection, mutual funds and certain personal lines including property and casualty insurance, group insurance, institutional fund management and consumer finance), Jackson National Life Insurance Company (one of the top three providers of variable annuities in the US), Prudential UK (a life and pensions provider to 7m UK customers) and M&G (a UK and European fund management business with total assets under management of £203 billion, at 30 June 2011). In the fund management business Prudential holds a 49% stake in a joint venture with ICICI, in the People's Republic of China, it had a 49% stake in a joint venture with CITIC and in Hong Kong it has a 36% equity stake in a joint venture with Bank of China International.

Sunday newspaper round-up: ENRC, Marks&Spencer, Prudential

In a letter dated April 12th, and seen by The Sunday Times, law firm Dechert alleges that ENRC - the FTSE 100 listed copper miner - engaged in several inappropriate actions, including "payments to African presidents" and $35m of misappropriated cash. The company has denied those claims. Dechert was discharged from the internal investigation after what ENRC labelled "inappropriate communications" with the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and the "unprofessional" handling of the investigation, claims Dechert denies. The law firm was fired a week before it was to update the SFO on its findings regarding the acquisition of three African companies.

Sharp fall in silver today – fallen to levels not seen since September 2010

This morning silver fell to levels not seen since September 2010 as commodity prices slumped overnight in Asia and this extended in early London trading. Although here is plenty of physical buying from China, India and the Middle East – there is heavy computer ETF selling.

A strong dollar and outperforming equity markets have shifted investor’s attention to more risky assets with silver suffering.

Bad news baked into the mining sector

Despite the fact that it’s only mid- May, the FTSE100 looks set to record a new high for the 12th consecutive month.

Compared to the likes of the Dow, the Dax and the S&P500, the FTSE being quite heavily weighted with the financial and mining sector has dragged itsheels in re-acquiring a record high level. Perhaps it’s the mining sector that is serving as a drag which since February has seen a total decline of almost 25%.
